My Self and My Environment
Environment plays a big role in
humans. We are more influence by our environment than culture. I personally
been influence more by the environments I grow up in, both rural and township.
My interests, desires, behavior, etc normally reflex this.
I'm a law student, an HIV/AIDS Peer
Educator and an outgoing individual. I enjoy interacting with people on a daily
basis. I'm an extrovert and I have the ability to adapt to any situation. A
good example of this would be my move to Cape Town from KZN which actually
brought out the best in me as I was able to unleash my true potential in the
classroom and in my extracurricular activities. I care about myself and my surroundings.
Even though I stay at res
I still make sure I take care of the
environment, one way or the other. I can safely say I've grown because being at
University has enabled me to view life differently. Having interacted with
people from all walks of life, I've learn that one's environment tends to have
an influence on the person they become. I'm grateful to have been given this
opportunity to study in Cape Town, I've learn to be more gracious, diligent
and assertive because it’s an opportunity of a lifetime and the best I can do
is give back. This prompted my decision to become an HIV/AIDS peer educator
because in as much as this disease is deadly and infecting people on the daily
basis, we as youngsters have to take a stand and raise awareness so that we
don't fall into the same trap. Moving from Durban to Cape Town I've notice that
these are two different environments
I’m taking this course as an
elective, because I’m interested in pursuing environmental law in future.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Thando Dlakana and I specifically chose to study Environmental and Sustainability Studies (ESS), because I am very much concerned about the environment that I live within. I believe that there is a need for me to educate people who are not fortunate enough to learn and expand their knowledge on the importance of preserving our natural resources, as well as maintaining and sustaining it for future generations to come. Figures in the past few years show that our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is boosted by our natural resources i.e. game reserves, national parks, platinum and gold etc.
Wildlife animals such as Rhino’s are gruesomely and brutally killed by poachers for their horns. It is under such circumstance that I believe that Rhino’s will be facing mass extinction, and thus, jeopardizing the tourism industries potential of growth. Our wetlands are less cared for, and our rivers are contaminated with harmful chemicals which causes diseases such as diarrhea and cholera. Factories are producing too much of air pollution and big motor vehicles produce too much carbon dioxide, which results to global warming. But be that as it may, I am in support of Diamonds contention that, “we are the cause of these problems, and therefore, we can solve them if we attempt to do so”. Henceforth, I felt obliged to enhance my understanding on the importance of the environment as to how to maintain and sustain it, and to educate those people who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The world as a whole is facing a catastrophic epidemic of HIV/AIDS and of which I believe, that the cure of HIV/AIDS is on our environment, but how then, I ask that scientists with their expertise, will ever be able to discover this cure without our assistance in showing keen interest on the environment by keeping it clean and tidy, as we may be destroying what might turn out to be an ingredient of the cure of HIV/AIDS. I hold, therefore, that it would be just and equitable for me to conclude that under all circumstances, there are preventative if not drastic measures which can be taken to preserve our precious land and if needs be, through sanctions of the law to those people who would disobey the laws which protect the environment.
