Quinton Matheson

I have always admired and respected the environment, however, it was only until after a humanities course with Delphi Carstens that it became something I wanted to protect and conserve. As an atheist I see nature as the only evidence for an omnipresent, all powerful god... This proposition is not uncommon and predates monotheistic religions. The ancients feared the environment, its 'wrath' and praised it in personification. Egyptian God Rah who hauled the Sun from East to West each day, the Greek God Poseidon God of the seas and Chaac, the Mayan god who brought rain.  Recently biologist James Lovelock gave the collection of the collection of life in its interlocked symbiosis the name Gaia after the Greek god Gaia, personifier of the Earth. In my opinion praise for the environment, mythological and scientific has more insight than the modern religions. Humanity cannot eat, drink or breath faith. We do however obtain sustenance from Gaia.... I just wish more people would realise it. For this reason I am happy to be apart of Environmental & Sustainability Studies, to learn how to protect and conserve the Environment.
